This is how you keep your onions, potatoes and other food groceries fresh

Nothing is more annoying than doing groceries and finding out that the food you’ve bought is no longer fresh. Rotten onions, sprouted potatoes; we’ve all been there. Luckily, these tips will make sure this is all a thing of the past. They’re super easy and quick, and they make a huge difference. See for yourself!

How to Store Vegetables to Maximize Freshness

  • Sprouted potatoes are very annoying, but you can easily prevent your potatoes from sprouting. Just keep an apple together with your potatoes, and it will take much longer before they start sprouting.
  • Something you really shouldn’t keep together with your potatoes are onions. Many people store these two vegetables in the same bowl, but this causes the onions to start rotting sooner. So, make sure you store these two a little way apart from each other. You can keep onions for about 2 to 3 months if you store them in a well-ventilated place.
  • Mold in your fridge is quick to spread. Make sure you clean your fridge once every month; that way, your groceries will remain fresh.
  • Is there a piece of fruit in your fruit bowl that’s about to go bad? Take it out. Mold can easily spread to other pieces of fruit, which will make sure they go bad quicker.
  • Store your cheese in a piece of parchment paper instead of cling film. The cheese will remain fresh for longer this way. If you’re afraid your cheese will dry out, you can rub some butter on it.
  • Have you just harvested some herbs and do you want to keep them instead of use them straight away? Put them in an ice cube tray and add some oil to it. Freeze this and get out an oil cube when you need it. The ideal solution!
  • If you want to keep your lettuce fresh for longer, you can put a kitchen towel on top of the head of lettuce and then wrap the entire thing in cling film. The paper will absorb the moisture from the lettuce, which makes sure it stays fresh.
  • Did you open a can of vegetables but is it too much to finish in one sitting? No problem! Store the contents of the can in a refrigerator box. If you let it sit in the can instead, the food will start to taste like the can.
  • Don’t store tomatoes inside the fridge! Tomatoes that aren’t ripe yet are best stored top down in a paper bag or in a box in a cool place. Do you want them to ripen quickly? Store them together with other fruit. Tomatoes that are ripe already should be stored at room temperature, out of direct sunlight.
