Table salt

One of the more popular types of salt, is table salt. But what is it exactly? Table salt comes from deposits that can be found underground. After it has been mined from these deposits, it is processed in order to remove certain minerals and to make sure no impurities end up on your plate. A lot of the standard table salts are fortified with certain additives and iodine. This keeps it from clumping. And iodine helps keep your thyroid healthy. Table salts have a very fine texture and a sharper taste. According to EatingWell, this type is best used when you don’t have to add a lot of it to your dish.

Sea salt

Sea salt comes from (as the name suggests) sea water. When sea water evaporates, the salt remains. Because this type of salt isn’t really processed, it still contains certain minerals that table salt doesn’t. Like magnesium, potassium, calcium and iron. And the taste or texture depends on where your sea salts come from. Some popular areas are France and the United Kingdom. The grains are bigger and the flavor isn’t as sharp. The usage of this type of salt depends on the type and texture. Flaky, soft grains can be used as finishing salts, the more finely ground type can be used while cooking or baking. Sea salt has a longer shelf life than table salt because it isn’t processed as much.

Healthy

But the most important question remains: is one healthier than the other? Some people believe that sea salt is healthier. But according to EatingWell, the nutrients that can be found in table salt are basically the same as the ones found in sea salt. The only difference is that because sea salt crystals are bigger, it might contain less sodium when it comes to volume. And that is because one teaspoon of table salt fits more crystals than one teaspoon of sea salt will.
